Furthest from Home
It had been a few months since they had first met. The thought of their first encounter still brought smile on her lips. Her smile was the most perfect thing that he had laid his eyes upon. It was the smile that had him ensnared. The pointed canines peeking out from the corners of her mouth, the crinkling of her eyes. She seemed to be the embodiment of happiness.
Now as she sat beside him, happily chirping away about her day at college, he watched the sunlight playing in her hair. They were at their usual meeting spot, under the lone banyan tree beside the temple on the hillock. It was only a short walk from the college but an undisturbed spot of scenic beauty. This was his favourite spot for meditation, his Me space, and she was the only girl he had brought out here.
She was suddenly aware of his gaze. A deep silence was between them and the air was filled with an unusual electricity. She looked into his eyes with a calmness he hadn't noticed before. He felt a deep urge to push off the little strand of hair that was on her cheek. There could be no prettier person than her.
He lift his hand, but was worried he would offend her and decided against it. He put his hand back down but landed on hers. He felt a shudder run down his arm, a tingling in his fingers. This was what her touch would feel like. She seemed hesitant but she had let her arm remain in his. They sat there in silence gazing out into the horizon.
Later that night, he sat at the dining table. His mother was bickering about the inflation, his dad was hidden behind the newspaper. His younger brother wanted help with his project and wouldn't stop pestering. But somewhere in the midst of all this commotion, he was lost. He was at the place he called his home yet he was far from there.
Or perhaps he had found what he would like to call home, and felt furthest away from her.
